Ad Revenue Tool: Uncle Charlie Promised Apple Pie
About year ago when I was working at a startup in Austin I was having a hard time doing quick advertising and revenue calculations on the run in my mind. Because advertising numbers are quoted in terms of CPM (costs per thousand), you have to be able to drop three zeroes while you’re putting together, say, the total amount of revenue you’ll see from X page views with $Y CPM. I was really slow at this, so I built a simple Excel file that does the computing for me. I kept it on my desktop and fired it up whenever I needed to do a quick calculation.
I’ve shared this Excel file with a handful of people over the last year and each got a lot of use out of it, so I figured I’d offer it here for free. I hope you get use out of it for your job or side projects.
Incidentally, the name comes from a very long acronym that develops once you do the formula. UCPAP=Uniques x Cpm x Page views per visitor x Ads per Page. The constant is a factor of .012 (to accommodate for 1000 and 12 months of the year). If you plug you own numbers in here, you’ll get an annual revenue number; totals are possible given uniques, page views, and / or impressions.
Enjoy.
