Blogs You Should Read in 2009
I really cut back on the amount of web reading I did in 2008. All the while, I added a few sites to my reading list that really had a great impact on the way I learned and viewed the world over the past year. These are all new sites (new to me, at least) that I discovered this year. If these aren’t already in your reading list, consider them.
Here’s my list of new blogs you must read this year:
Blog: Andrew Chen’s Blog
Why Should I read It? One of the most accessible blogs about the internet and its users. Andrew Chen will walk you step by step through an aspect of internet business or interation and explain why it’s important.
Bookmark it if you: Study human-internet interactions either professionally or as past-time.
Blog: Our RISD
Why Should I Read It? John Maeda is RISD’s new chief. While he likely gets holiday cards from Al Gore, Karim Rashid and Frank Gehry and the rest of us don’t, he’s not afraid to blog. Maeda explorers the bleeding edge of technology and design and provides love letters and photo galleries from his journeys.
Bookmark it if you: Think design and innovation can save the world.
Blog: Russell Davies Delicious Stream
Why Should I Read It? Russell Davies’s Delicious stream is a blog in itself, really. His collection of bookmarked links reveals a hardworking dreamer’s world view. Davies isn’t afraid to point you toward a research paper, design discussion or tasty collection of photos from an adventure.
Bookmark it if you: Like a steady supply of material that reveals how and why the world works.
Blog: Fine.Incalas
Why Should I Read It? You don’t really read Fine (its name changes frequently, it should be noted) as much as you thumb through it—Telly Koosis’s stream of really good stuff is formatted in lozenge form: just a link and a headline. He focuses on things that would likely bring a smile to your face and isn’t afraid of the exclamation mark.
Bookmark it if you: Like fun, weird stuff but prefer to have that aspect of your life curated by a Greek designer living in Oakland. Telly and I went to grade school together in Michigan and I’m thankful I rediscovered how awesome he (and his blog) is.
Blog: A Continuous Lean
Why Should I Read It? ACL is a well-edited appreciation for the types of things your Grandfather wore, smoked, drank, or pedaled. In the nooks and crannies between physical matter, ACL posits an American return to excellence that is wholeheartedly sincere, hard-working and unabashedly well dressed.
Bookmark it if you: Aren’t afraid to admit that you’re depressed that everyone wears sweatpants when they travel, or that Made in America isn’t what it once was.
Blog: The New Café Racer Society
Why Should I Read It? A steady stream of how’d-they-find-that motorcycle material—historical and contemporary—gives the non-biker in me a daily reminder that I’m missing out on one of the best experiences to be had on wheels. In an era where there are probably too many car and bike blogs to begin with, I’ll gladly take TNCRS over most of them.
Bookmark it if you: Love two wheels and the culture that it spawns.
