A hard-won magazine cover is revealed in this time-lapsed adventure for the creation of an issue of Macworld. Watching things being made, even if the subject matter is of no specific need to you, is a useful pastime and one of my favorite pursuits. I have hundreds saved in bookmark file.

Process visuals, whether moving images or still photos or even line drawings, are incredibly powerful because they

  • Help your mind make connections across wide expanses of work product.
  • Force “pattern breaking” — the act of destroying the somnambulant line of thinking your brain was headed down. This is like taking a mental shower.
  • Give you an appreciation for end products, thereby increasing your appreciation for serial steps, unplanned changes and the inherently beautiful act of editing.
