FZ with some early thoughts on adding value to those who consume music, as opposed to those companies who sell it. By the way, any mention of Zappa on my blog requires an immediate listening of Watermelon in Easter Hay. Don’t have one handy? Right here, buddy.

Detail as if no one is watching

Michael Mann could have used any guns in Heat (my favorite movie of all time), but he dove deep, as if he was preparing for his own little war. This guy details the guns in Heat, while the rather incredible IMFDB (Internet Movie Firearms Data Base) gives the full blow-by-blow. I always knew Mann was a gun nerd, but I had no idea of the variety (Waingro holds a Spanish-made Star Megastar in a nickel finish in the photo above, one of about 30 different guns used). Specific techniques were important, too:
Despite being a full auto weapon, the director Michael Mann instructed Al Pacino to fire only Semi auto, being that the LAPD lieutenant would be concerned for stray rounds hitting bystanders.
I think that investing in this sort of detail needs to be its own reward, because it could be years (if ever) before anyone actually notices. Some messages-in-a-bottle never get found, but we still need to throw them in the ocean. I think this is the post script to Diego Rodriguez’s Innovation Principle No. 3 (“How do we want people to feel after they experience this?”) What if they only experience the big thing and not the little gems? You should design so that people could see everything, but sleep comfortably when they don’t.
